Ranks and Limits
Academy StudentAcademy students make up the student body of the Ninja Academy, where they are trained and prepared for life as a shinobi. They are not an actual part of the shinobi force, as they are still in the process of mastering the very basics of the ninja lifestyle. However, they can be conscripted as part of the war potential in times of emergency. Academy students spend their time honing the various skills they are required to have and undergoing various tests and exams to see how they progress. Besides ordinary school subjects such as history and mathematics, they are taught the basics of ninjutsu, taijutsu, and most likely also genjutsu. This includes learning about chakra and how to control it, tactics, hand seals, and several E-rank techniques, such as the Clone Technique and the Transformation Technique. They are also trained in working both individually and in teams. Eventually they are given a graduation test to see if they are ready to try and become genin. Passing this test does not automatically grant them this title, as they need to pass a second test given by their jounin instructor, but they do receive a forehead protector. Those who fail either of these tests are sent back to the Academy. The requirements for graduating vary from village to village.

GeninGenin are the lowest level of ninja and also the ones that display the most difference in power. When they become genin, ninja start to do their bit for their village's economy – being sent on missions that the village gets paid for. They are typically sent either on D-rank missions, which are almost entirely risk-free jobs of manual labor, or, rarely, on C-rank missions, which are a cut above that and begin to verge on real "ninja" work that have a very low possibility of risk to the ninja involved. Genin are put in four-man cells or squad, consisting of three genin and a jounin-sensei, in order to learn teamwork and experience true ninja life under the supervision and protection of an elite shinobi. Though genin are relatively low-leveled ninja, they can progress to become a chuunin, by successfully completing the chuunin exams, a set of difficult tasks made to test the skills of genin to see whether or not they should be chuunin.

ChuuninChuunin are ninja who are qualified to guide other ninja and lead missions. Chuunin have reached a level of maturity and ability that primarily consists of leadership skills and tactical prowess. Genin who do not have the skills to become chūnin are weeded out in the chūnin exams. Chuunin are typically sent on C-rank or B-rank missions. To become a chuunin, a genin participates in a large examination, known as the "Chuunin Exams". Those who pass the test and become chuunin can wear an identifying flak jacket that holds ninjutsu scrolls. This vest is not mandatory; instead, some opt for more elaborate clothing like capes and robes.

JouninJounin are generally highly-experienced shinobi with great individual skill who serve as military captains. They are often sent on A-rank missions, and experienced jōnin may even be sent on S-rank missions. It is not unusual for jounin to go on missions alone. To become a Jounin, a Chuunin must be apointed as worthy by their Kage. (Staff approval is also demanded). When a ninja becomes a jounin, they may be assigned a three-man genin team to supervise. One part of their duties is to help instruct and train these genin to become competent ninja.

Special Forces The Special Forces are task forces assembled under a different name for each village, each with their own style of combat and own purpose, even if similar in ways. Most often they are groups created to protect the Kage of that Ninja Village.
Konoha: ANBU Black-Ops (Special Assassination and Tactical Squad)
The ANBU, short for Ansatsu Senjutsu Tokushu Butai, take orders directly from the Kage, performing special high-level missions, such as assassinations and torture. The ANBU usually work in teams formed to the requirements of the mission, ensuring maximum success. The shinobi in the ANBU are hand-picked by the Kage; chosen for their individual capabilities and special skills. Age, gender, background, or previous rank bear no weight in this decision. The ANBU wear porcelain masks, often designed with animal characteristics, in order to distinguish themselves from normal shinobi and to conceal their identities. Most ANBU members wear black hooded cloaks, and have a signature spiral tattoo on their shoulder.
Kirigakure: Legendary Swordsmen Of The Mist
The Legendary Swordsmen of the Mist is an organization consisting of only the greatest blade wielding shinobi of their generation that Kirigakure can produce. The Swordsmen Of The Mist are loyal followers of the Mizukage, and are often sent on high ranking missions, or sent after extremely dangerous criminals. Each of the Swordsmen have incredible skill in Kenjutsu, and each wield a unique sword that represents their title as a Swordsmen Of The Mist. There are no actual ranks within the Swordsmen Of The Mist, aside from the Mizukage having direct control, and leadership over the entire group, as well as a Swordsmen Leader, who is at the top of the group, though beneath the power of the Mizukage.

Missing NinjaMissing ninja are ninja who left their village without the intention of returning and severing ties with the said village, often because they have committed criminal acts or to pursue other personal gains. The ninja village that they are from will often try to track them down and eliminate them, though exceptions can sometimes be made, depending on who the Kage of that Ninja Village is.
As Missing Ninja does not have it's own rank, all Missing Nin are bound to the limits of whatever Village Nin is equivalent to them in letter rank. For example, a B rank missing ninja would have the same limitations as a Chuunin.
AkatsukiThe Akatsuki are a group of Ninja varying in letter ranks. Some low, some high. The Akatsuki are a group of criminals who often share one goal; World Domination. Though, some may not be set on just that goal, and tend to use the group for their own personal needs, or goals. Unlike most groups, this group currently has no leader, and is ran as a group, or team. This is a group without any type of actual ranks, thus, fights can often break out on who is the strongest, and many arguments about position can occur.
(Because there are no Bijuu currently, the Akatsuki has been changed up slightly from the Cannon version. They are a band of leaderless criminals each using one another for their own needs, or who are all after one goal. The group may change in the future, in a plot, though this is all they are for now)Similar to Missing Ninja, Akatsuki Members do not have their own specific rank, thus, all Akatsuki are bound to the limits of whatever Village Nin is equivalent to them in letter rank. For example, a B rank Akatsuki would have the same limitations as a Chuunin.
